Worked example
The method
The original price is multiplied by the discount rate to find the first saving.
A second discount applies to the already-discounted price, not the original price. Two 20% discounts therefore equal a 36% effective discount, not 40%.
The final price is subtracted from the original price to show exactly how much money stays in your pocket.

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage, divide by 100, then subtract that saving from the original price.
No. Successive discounts apply one after the other. A second discount is calculated from the reduced price, so the effective rate is lower than simply adding both rates.
